The Charm of Silence is meant to provide some means of quietude or other, depending on the manner in which the charm is used or applied, either upon a recipient, over an area, or as a Veil, as follows.
The “Touch of Stealth” aspect is used to provide the recipient with effective SL equal to POT in any one aspect of the Stealth skills. For additional aspects to be affected, the charm must be cast again for each. If the recipient already has cultivated SL’s in any of the aspects of Stealth to which the charm is applied, the POT is added to his effective SL for the DUR.
The charm merely adds the POT as an aid to the SL, or acts as a substitute for it if no skill has yet been cultivated in the aspect to be affected. It is not a free pass to travel with guaranteed Stealth. Howsoever the charm is used to enhance the recipient’s Stealth, it still functions in task resolution the same as any other Stealth skill, using the observer’s (Sentry) Perception/AWA as the DV, normally.
Alternately, the charm can be applied specifically to a body part by Sorcery (or Naming), like silencing a mouth so no sound can emanate, or silencing one’s feet so his footsteps cannot be heard, or silencing his hands so that clapping, smacking or rapping on walls or tables or other furnishings, or snapping of fingers all are silenced, but only one such application per casting of the charm is allowed. By Naming the charm might be cast upon a hat, a pair of gloves, shoes or slippers one can don and doff as desired so that part on which it is worn makes no sound.
Having a part of the body like this silenced is NOT the same as having it applied to the recipient’s Stealth skill(s). There are plenty of other sounds that might be made in passing that such a use of the charm cannot mask, especially involving interacting with furnishings and foliage and passing through doors with squeaky hinges or across floors composed of squeaky wooden floorboards.
Only when applied directly to a creature or being can the Touch of Stealth be resisted.
When the Silence is applied in a Circle to cover an AoE it utterly dampens any sound occurring within it so it can neither be heard by those within the AoE NOR by those outside of it. In the same vein, it prevents any noise occurring outside its bounds from being heard by those within. Unlike the skill-like application of the “Touch of Silence“, this Silence is guaranteed. In this application, the charm is created and applied in the same manner as any other AoE magick, as described under the Heading “Magick in Play”, normally.
It is under this circumstance that any and all sound-based magicks, especially those of explosive effect like a Thunderclap act to Oppose, and can be used to dispel the Silence. Any Thunderclap hitting a Circle of Silence charm of equal or lesser POT has no effect. The Thunderclap must be of greater POT to shatter the Silence and dispel it.
Any sound-based dweomer such as a Thunderclap, or any charm incorporating that or a similar charm into its effects (GM’s discretion), hitting a Circle or Reign of Silence charm of equal or greater POT has no effect. The Thunderclap (et al.) must be of greater POT to have a chance to shatter the Silence and Dispel it.
The Circle or Reign of Silence cannot be resisted.
When the Silence is applied as a Veil it is used to seal off some window, portal or passageway so to prevent any sound occurring upon one side of it from penetrating to the other side of it. Whatever side the noise or sound occurs on, it stays on that side. In this way it can be used to aid intrepid infiltrators from being heard by the guards down the hall, or to make sure that one’s private conversation can be carried on as candidly, heatedly and frankly as desired without being overheard by those listening at the door or window, much less out in the courtyard or down the block.
The Veil aspect can be up to (MGA + POT) yards in length and used to enclose an area of up to (length ÷ 3), or to create a dome or cell enclosing an area of up to the same height/radius. It has absolutely NO physical substance and cannot be in any way disturbed or harmed by any physical weapon or agency.
The general purpose of the veil or Wall of Silence is to contain sound. At the practitioner’s discretion, however, the charm may be tuned to block sound in only one direction, so those within can ave their privacy while still being able to hear all that is happening around them normally, OR so everyone around them can hear what is going on within normally, while those within can hear nothing of what transpiring around them.
However it is applied, this Silence is guaranteed, unlike the skill-like application of the “Touch of Silence“.
